My PledgeMusic campaign is now at 74%. Thanks so much for getting me this far! This is only money for the recording/producing fees. I haven’t added in anything for travel, CD duplication, or any other merch. I hope that you’ll take a few minutes to peruse the exclusives and be a part of making some amazing art happen. This album has been a long time coming and I can’t wait to make it and share it with you. Unlike many pledge campaigns, this album is not yet recorded, so you’ll be directly responsible for making it possible.
Like House Concerts? Want to WIN one? I’ve had a lovely Pledger buy a house concert and donate it to be given away to someone who’d like to host it! How amazing is that? To be eligible to win, you need to have pledged £20 or more from the start of the campaign until midnight on October 30th, be located in the UK or one of the specified US Cities/States. States/places that are included in this are: NYC, NJ, PA, WI, WV, OH, MD, VA, KY, TN, LA and Austin or Dallas and obviously WANT to host a house concert! 🙂 Get in there for a chance to win! Pledge today! Even if you’ve never done it before, it’s super easy! You can even use your PayPal account.
Last but not least, here’s a weird little video of my working out harmonies for a brand new duo tune co-written with Rob Szabo. I was in the States for several weeks, saying goodbye to my amazing Mum when this was recorded. In desperate need of something else to do/think about. This whole album is about channeling all the negative stuff that’s happened in the past year into something positive. Into truth, and forgiveness, and new beginnings. Thanks for listening!
So I’ve finally made some time to get all the liner notes written up and the little extras for my new covers album! I’m so proud of this record…it’s exactly what you’d hear if I was playing in your living room, but with some little extras thrown in with lots of stacked vocal harmonies and a fantastic bas/voice duo with Steve Lawson. I’m so pleased to get to put my own spin on these tunes and to reinvent such fantastic songs…songs that are all near and dear to my heart. My only regret is that I didn’t get to have any guest musicians on the record (with the exception of Steve on one track) but I’m planning on doing a second covers album in the future though…chock full of my favourite musicians! I might even post a list of songs and let everyone vote on the ones that I cover. Still thinking about that one. Anyway, hit play, and you can hear Volume 1, and download it if you wish!
For some of you, you may not know quite a few of the songs on this record. I decided that this time around I was going to do songs that mean something to me personally….and I hope that if you don’t know the song it will prompt you to go and investigate the original. There are links to youtube videos of all the songs in the liner notes on bandcamp. In a way this might make it seem more like an album of new material from me. Either way, I get to record and perform the songs I love, and hopefully you will grow to love them as much as I do! I’ve had to set a minimum on this album just to cover the cost of licensing all the songs. Whilst Limelight has made licensing so much easier…it’s still pricey so the minimum is just to help cover these costs. The initial release will be digital, but I am printing up some copies for Greenbelt…so if you’re a die-hard shiny coaster fan…there will be a 200 physical copy release in August.
For the curious, here’s who did the songs originally:
Beautifully Undone: Lindy
Junk: Paul McCartney
It’s a Shame About Ray: The Lemonheads
Moon River: Henri Mancini
Consider Me Gone: Sting
Toledo: The Blue Nile
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) : Dead or Alive
Beautiful: Rob Szabo
God Loves Everyone: Ron Sexsmith
There’s lots of extra info about each song on bandcamp along with links back to the original artists so go and have a look! As always, thanks for listening! xoxoxo Lo.
My goodness, I have NOT been a good blogger since Baby Flapjack was born! Whilst you would have thought that a lot of our music would have suffered after having a baby…we managed to do a tour and record a new live album in the process! We played with some of my favourite musicians…such as Todd Reynolds and Neil Alexander and the whole experience of touring with a baby was amazing and difficult and humbling all at the same time. We realised how lucky we are to have a baby who thrives on new people and new situations, and how the help of wonderful friends along they way is indispensable. So please check out Live So Far and Steve’s posting on it is here. It’s pay what you want, or rather what you think it’s worth…and no matter what, we just want you to have a copy of it! Also there is a BEAUTIFUL live video, shot by Brian Wilson using 2 Canon 5D Mark 2’s and and another fixed camera. More news soon, I promise!
Lordy me. I can’t stop raving about how FANTASTIC this trio is. All you naysayers asbout improvised music may have to eat your hats after hearing Dodds, Lawson and Wood. As one of of Steve’s 8 year old fans said in a note to him. “This is grate! I’ve never herd enyting this good!”
First, take world class drummer Roy Dodds, who has played with the likes of Eddie Reader, Jacqui Dankworth, Theo Travis and many more…Couple that with solo-bassist extraordinaire Steve Lawson, (yes, so I’m married to him but I’d still think he was brilliant even if I wasn’t 🙂 and then the icing on the triple-layer cake Patrick Wood, who in my opinion is a total genius. His sense of melody and sub-melody are unsurpassed. My problem with many Rhodes players is the fact that they just try to solo constantly and Patrick ALWAYS gives the song just what it needs….indeed all these guys are like that. The chemistry between them makes for a trio of imrovised music that sounds like SONGS. Brilliant melodic songs. Each time you go to see them it’s a new creation just for you, and not to be repeated. Perfect heartfelt swirling ambient goodness. Mmm mmm good AND good for you too!
Hi there All! Played a really nice gig last night at The Waiting with Robert Logan.…what amazing loop-bassed ambient IDM he makes. So lovely. I’m hoping to work with him a bit in the future on some of my crazy new a capella loopy vocal goodness. Please check him out!
Here’s a pic of us from last night…being slightly rubbish but having a great time! 🙂
